Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump went head-to-head for the first time Monday night in a debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. The debate was moderated by Lester Holt of NBC News and came as polls both nationally and in swing states are increasingly tight.

The 90-minute debate is divided into six segments, each 15 minutes long. We'llexplore three topic areas tonight: Achieving prosperity; America's direction;and securing America. At the start of each segment, both candidates will be asked with the same lead-off question, and they will each have up to two minutes to respond. '
